As any smoker will know, kicking the habit once and for all can be an extremely difficult and drawn out experience, with the majority trying and failing many times. Not many of us can go cold turkey and turn our backs on a habit that we have practiced and perfected over many years!
While once a sociable pursuit, smoking is now largely regarded as an anti-social habit – one that increasing numbers of people are keen to break. Apart from the stale smell of smoke that permeates the clothes and hair of a smoker, the staining on the hands, nails and teeth and the fact that it is no longer permitted to smoke in the workplace, shops, restaurants and bars – the bottom line is that smoking is dangerous.
Smoking can lead to all sorts of health issues. For a start, it affects your lungs and can exacerbate conditions such as coughs, colds, wheezing and asthma. It can also cause such diseases as pneumonia, emphysema and lung cancer. According to the NHS, smoking kills 78,000 in the UK every year; it is also responsible for 84% of deaths from lung cancer and 83% of deaths from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
So, how best to give up? While there are numerous treatments and aids available to help those of us who want to give up smoking – such as nicotine gum and patches to help with the cravings – the fact is that these are quite often quick fixes which may only work for a short while. Giving up smoking on your own and without support can be a long, drawn-out process and finding the willpower to stick it out can be exceptionally hard.
Hypnosis, on the other hand, is a highly effective strategy and the success rates speak for themselves. As a trained hypnotherapist, I know that the power of your mind is the key to becoming a permanent non-smoker. Hypnosis is not a magic wand or mind control – the key to success is that you must WANT to quit. Hypnosis can supercharge your desire to quit, and we use the power of your own unconscious mind to take back control of what YOU want.
Together, we can delete cravings and old habits and instead install new programmes of breathing clean air and feeling happy and healthy. We focus on the things that you want to achieve, which may include spending more time with the family, having more money to spend, smelling sweeter, being more sociable. I have had some clients in the past who even refused to go on holiday because they couldn’t bear the thought of being stuck on a plane and not being able to smoke.
The biggest motivator I have experienced with my clients is that of family – young mums who don’t want their kids to cuddle them as they are conscious of smelling of smoke, grandparents who worry that they won’t be able to kick a football around with the grandchildren, and people missing out on spending time with their loved ones because they go outside so often to have a smoke.
These are the things we focus on in our sessions – not the bad stuff – you know all that already. The best motivator is what is important to you, what gets you emotional. When your unconscious mind understands what you want to achieve (rather than what you don’t want) it will do everything it can to get you there. I’m just the facilitator or the interpreter to get you what you want.
